The academy will lay the foundations for the decision making necessary for learning more advanced tactical concepts in the years to come.

Training is offered once a week for 90 minutes at a time convenient for participating families. The academy will offer its own league of small field 4v4 games at All American Indoor Sports in Lenexa and Overland Park. During this time the player will continue to play on his or her own recreational team. GIRLS GOVERNOR CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
The following was provided by Doug Miller, coach of the U9 Lady Attack:

Extra Extra read all about it...

LADY ATTACK 94/95 wins Governor’s Cup

(Topeka, KS)

This news story is hot off the wire. The U9G Lady Attack won the Governor’s Cup this weekend. Outstanding play and teamwork by the entire team throughout the tournament. The Lady Attack reached the Championship game after winning all three division games. In the first contest, the Lady Attack beat a very athletic team from McPherson 2-0. This was a very early Saturday morning game and the girls showed up ready to play. From there the Lady Attack played a team from Leavenworth who had also won their first game on Saturday. Playing for the lead in the division, the Attack went on to record their second shut out of the tournament with a 6-0 victory.

Heading into Sunday, the Lady Attack were in the driver’s seat for the B pool in the CG09 bracket. The first half of Sunday’s game, the girls played a marvelous half and recorded 10 first half goals. At half, the coaches challenged the girls to play with pride and respect. The girls worked hard in the second half to sharpen the passing game. Final score 11-1 (tested out some new potential keepers in this game, sorry Kenzie you may stay as a field player :).

For the finals, the Lady Attack played one of their biggest rivals in KCFC who also advanced through the A bracket by winning 2 games and 1 tie. The game started out with the Lady Attack back on their heels and fighting hard in the defensive end. After recognizing that this was competition at its finest, the girls responded to take a 1-0 lead on a very aggressive goal battling in the box by Sophie. A defensive breakdown early in the second half lead to an equalizing goal by the KCFC team. The game then came down to the final minutes. As the ball was cleared by KCFC from their goal box, Emily stepped up from a defensive position and put it over the keeper’s head from a few yards outside the box to take the lead 2-1. For the final minute and 20 seconds, the Attack held off the KCFC girls to record the victory and the championship. Excellent play Ladies!! The coaches were extremely proud of the girls for their play this weekend. Congratulations to all.

Thanks to all the Mom’s for giving up their Mother’s Day to watch soccer!

ATTACK ALUMNI, WILLIAM JOHN, NAMED TO U20 NATIONAL TEAM
William John, who plays on the Attack 84/85 team, a three time Kansas State Cup Champion and two time Region II semi-finalist was named to the US U20 National Team in early March.

Will is no stranger to junior National Teams having played with the U14 through U17 US teams as he aged through the system.

Last Fall Will was part of the St. Louis University team that reached the NCAA elite eight. For his efforts Soccer America named Will to its list of Freshman All Americans.

This summer William will be returning to play for the U19 84/85 Attack team and the Kansas City Brass.

U9 GIRLS WIN INDOOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
The U9 94/95 Lady Attack won the Winter II U10, Div. 2 indoor soccer championship the first weekend in March defeating a strong KCFC Team 5-2. The victory represented a switch from the Fall outdoor League when the KCFC squad took the championship, leaving the Lady Attack in second. The two teams are developing a strong and healthy rivalry.

Congratulations to the girls for a successful indoor season!

KANSAS CITY BRASS KICKS OFF 2004 SEASON WITH A NUMBER OF ATTACK PLAYERS ON THE ROSTER
The Kansas City Brass began its 2004 campaign with a series of exhibition games against Drake University and Drury University at William Jewell College on March 7.

The Brass reserve team featured six Attack players who are finishing their senior year in high school: Oran Andrews, Kurt Larson, Lucas Rodriguez, Josh Howard, Steve Grow, and Robby Borchardt.

The reserves acquitted themselves quite well, losing 0-1 to Drury, 0-1 to Drake and 0-2 to the senior Brass squad (which had four Attack Alumni).

Look for these players to be playing on the full Brass squad this year and in the years to come. The Brass in the seven years it has been playing has produced over 30 players who went on to play pro soccer, all of whom played youth soccer in Kansas City. This represents about 20% of those players who wore a Brass uniform.

well. We should all be very proud. And even though I
was the coach of the team, I had nothing to do with the
selection of the All-Star team. They were chosen buy
a select committee of two National Team staff coaches
and 2 Regional staff coaches, on their own merits."

Congrats Lucas!

COLLEGE ALUMNI UPDATE
Many Attack Alumni have earned All Conference honors and other rewards, but two Alumni are in the hunt for the big prize.

Matt Jewett, who plays at Creighton University, and Will John, who is at St. Louis University, are playing in the NCAA elite eight this Saturday.

For Matt it will be the third time in four years that the Blue Jays have reached the elite eight and a repeat of last year when Creighton also met St. John’s in the quarter finals.

William is part of the youngest team in the final eight with eight freshman. They will play a Maryland squad that has the best defense in College soccer.

No other Club in Kansas City has seen its Alumni reach such heights. You can follow the results at:

KANSAS HIGH SCHOOL ALL STATE TEAMS SELECTED - SEVEN ATTACK PLAYERS NAMED
The Kansas High School All State Teams were selected and included six Attack players.

Oran Andrews, Steve Grow and Brett Rose led the group. Oran and Steve anchored the defense for State Champion St. Thomas Aquinas and will fill the same roles for their Attack 84/85 and 85/86 teams as they seek to defend their State Cup Championships this coming June. Brett as a forward at Blue Valley West was a thorn in their sides in High School.

Joining Oran, Brett and Steve were four other Attack players from the Attack 86/87 team. Also receiving 6A First Team Honors was Jake Brewer (Lawrence High School) and 5A First Team Honors was Bryce Porter (Bishop Miege). 5A Second Team Honors were garnered by Tommy Fitzgerald (Mill Valley) and Garret Scott (Bishop Miege).

LADY ATTACK TEAMS FINISH STRONG IN LEAGUE PLAY
The last games are being finished in Leagues around Kansas and it is apparent that the Lady Attack teams are among the best.

The U9 girls finished second in the first division of their age group in the Kansas Premier Soccer League.

The U10 girls playing up one year finished second in U11 Division 2 of the Kansas Premier Soccer League. The U10’s amassed 25 goals and allowed only 4 tying the goal differential of the first place team and going 10 goals better than the next place finisher.

The U13 Lady Attack followed the pattern and also finished second in the 1st Division of its age group in KPSL. The U13 girls are a new team making their accomplishment all the more telling. They also reached this level under the hardship of a coaching transformation as Mark Bilski was transferred to Dallas leaving the girls under the split guidance of Ramon Tau and Jim Schwab who filled in.

While the indoor season is young, the girls are continuing to dominate the opposition. The U9’s are in second place playing up a year in indoor soccer at All American, and are in 1st place in their age group in Futsal.

The U10’s playing in the first division of U11 Futsal are currently in 1st place. They made that position the hard way rallying last weekend from losing 1-5 at half time to a year older Comets team to winning in the final minute 7-6.

The U13’s are 1-1 after 2 games in Futsal, playing the indoor game without walls for the first time.

Check back in mid February to learn how the girls come out in the indoor version of the game.

ATTACK PLAYERS ON STATE HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS.
6A Saint Thomas Aquinas took a 4-1 win over Wichita Northwest to win the 6A Kansas state title. Congratulations to the Saints who now can add their first 6A state title to the six 5A state titles they won between 1992 and 1999. Another chapter in a rich soccer history.

The Saints would have been lost without the strong support they received from players on Attack Soccer Teams. In fact one third of the Aquinas Varsity came from the Attack. From the 84/85 three Time KSYSA State Cup Winning team came Saints Captain Oran Andrews; from last year’s U17 KYSYA State Cup Winning Attack 85/86 Team came Steven Grow; and, from last year’s U16 Attack team that was a KSYSA State Cup Semi-finalist were Danny Carroll, Brett Lemmon, Bryan Moore, and Phil Newman.

In a game for third place, 5A Mill Valley (Tommy Fitzgerald) prevailed on penalty kicks after regulation and four overtimes with Blue Valley ended in a 1-1 tie. The penalty kick shootout was familiar ground for Mill Valley, since they advanced to State with a penalty kick shootout win over Salina Central in their quarterfinal game. Congratulations to the Jaguars who proved they are a force to be reckoned with in their first year of 5A competition.

Kansas City Christian (Jacob Hammack) posted a 3-0 shutout win over Wichita Trinity in the 4A third place game. In Kansas City Christian’s five game playoff run, they posted a 13-2 goal differential, with Jacob recording shutouts in four of the five games. Congratulations to the Panthers who showed great character this season after losing more than half their starting players from last year’s 4A state championship team. The future is bright at KCCS.

On the Missouri side, the Rockhurst High School Hawklets for the seventh consecutive team have reached the Missouri Large Class High School Finals Four. Led by Seniors Robby Borchardt, Kerry Bowen, Seamus McLaughlin and Jimmy Chalmers from the Attack 84/85 and 85/86 Teams. The Hawks lost in the semi-finals to eventual Sate Champion Chaminade, but came back strong to win the Third Place game. The critical role played by the Attack players can be seen in the final two games. Robby scored Rockhurst’s only goal in the semi-final match v. Chaminade and Jimmy got the assist in the 3rd place game v. Central (Cape Girardeau).

Soon the High School Honors will start flowing in and many Attack players will be recognized. Check back in the coming weeks for news on Attack players selected for All League, All Conference, All Region, and All State Teams.

LADY ATTACK TEAMS AT THE FALL GOVERNOR’S CUP
The U10 and U9 Lady Attack teams ventured to the Fall Governor’s Cup and both added the extra challenge of playing a year up to an otherwise competitive tournament.

The U10 girls, coached by Jim Schwab, posted three shutouts, notching a tie and two wins by scores of 0-0, 1-0 and 2-0 against the year older teams before falling in the semi-finals. One of the referees watching the U10 girls commented that they were one of the best "U12" teams he had seen in years. He was unaware that the division was a U11 age group and that the Attack was a U10 side.

The U9 girls, coached by Doug Miller, left an equally strong impression. The team went 1-2, losing its first match to the No. 2 U10 team in the Western Missouri Soccer League by a score of 0-1, and falling again to the top U10 team from Topeka 0-3 (a team the U9 ladies held scoreless for the first half), before rebounding for a 1-0 win in their final game.

The U10 team is currently solidly in second place in the U11, Division 2 Kansas Premier Soccer League, while the U9 girls are in second place in U9, Division 1 of the Kansas Premier League.

SEASON OPENING TOURNAMENTS
The U14 Attack boys coached by Carlos Olivas started the season with a strong showing at the Fall Kick Off Tournament in Kansas City, capturing the championship.

The following week, many Attack teams were literally washed out but over 11 inches of rain that led to the cancelation of the Midwest All Girls Tornament (MAG). The U13 Lady Attack managed to get in one game in the rain dispatching the Tulsa Nationals 5-2. The U9 Lady Attack squeaked in two games, a 7-0 pasting of the Blue Valley Angels and a heart breaking 2-1 loss to the Pink Panthers.

ATTACK PLAYERS TO SEE U.S. WOMEN PLAY ON OCTOBER 22
When the U.S. Women’s National Team comes to Arrowhead Stadium on Wednesday, October 22, more than 100 Lady Attack players and parents will be in attendance. Look for the Lady Attack players in their blue jerseys. If you are interested in joining the girls, please contact Kelly Blinzler at 913-491-0372 for ticket information.

ATTACK ALUMNI IN COLLEGE
Many Attack Alumni are off to strong starts with their college programs.

William John is making a strong mark at St. Louis University. Four games into the season with the 4th ranked team in the nation, Will as a freshman has already notched a starting spot, a winning goal, participated in St. Louis winning its two season opeinging tournaments at Virginia and Clemson, been named the Clemson tournament MVP and selected to the Soccer America team of the week. Not bad.

At Rockhurst University, Pat Geraghty and Brian Wittenborn and starting the season where they ended last year with a national ranking and wins over NCAA Div. 2 national power Wisconsin Parkside.

At another nationally rank school, Creighton, Matt Jewett led the Blue Jays to wins to two national powers, including Furham.

All has not been rosey, however. Adam Blinzler has been red shirted in what would be his senior year at Grand Canyon University when he torn ligaments in his knee in practice.

Check back frequently for more updates on Attack players in college.

SUMMER TOURNAMENT RESULTS
USA CUP.

From Linda Strieby, team Manager from the U14 Attack. Many, many thanks to all players who participated in the USA Cup for the Attack 88/89! It was a wonderful week of soccer and team camaraderie. Here are the final results.

Attack 1 Instituto Mexico 0 (Mexico)
Attack 8 Deep Run Valley 2 (PA)
Attack 2 Eagan Wildcats 0 (MN)

Playoff Round
Attack 1 Grand Island Blizzard 0 (NY)

Quarterfinals
Attack 1 Anoka Tornadoes 0 (MN)
(won in first golden goal overtime)

Semifinals
Attack 2 Hillsdale United SA 3 (IL)
This game went to 2 golden goal overtimes and penalty kicks
The winner was determined after all 11 players on the field had taken a shot. In the Championship game for the U14 Boys, the eventaul winner was the team the Attack beat in the preliminary round! Final Result:

Instituto Mexico 3 Hinsdale United SA 0

The U14’s were joined by the U16’s at the USA Cup. The U16’s also went undefeated int he preliminary rounds, only to fall in the Quarterfinals to the eventual tournament finalist.

5v5 Top Gun Shoot Out.

Seven players from the future U10 Freedom and Federation combined to play to 100 degree weather against teams like the Legends and the Comets in the 5v5 Top Gun Shootout. The team dispatched their first opponent 6-1, and after going up 2-0 against the Legends, the girls fell behind 4-3 in the triple digit heat. The Comets went up, with the girls fighting back to tie the game. Each team they played threw maves of substitutes into the game. Nevertheless, the girls toughed it out and began to bond.

Advancing to the finals on goal differential, the team faced more adversity as one player fell ill with the flu reducing the team to only one sub. Further, the girls had less than an hour’s rest from their come from behind tie with the Comets and the Championship game.

In the Championship game the heat and exhaustion were telling. Still the girls fought on, and though down 2-0 halfway into the first half, continued to battle. When Kirstyn Corder twisted an ankle, she continued to play so other players could get water and a needed break. The girls forged back, tallying a goal, but the end of time ended the chance, bringing a second place finish and a chance to seek a reprieve from the heat.

LADY ATTACK TEAMS DOMINATE LEAGUE
In each division of the Kansas Premier Soccer League that the four Lady Attack teams play, the girls dominated.

The U11 girls played in the U12 division and went undefeated and untied, while amassing over 80 goals more than their opponents in securing first place.

The U10 Lady Attack won its division with a strong 4-0 win in their final game over the then league leader. The U10 team finished strong, tieing the 1st division league champions and bouncing three division one teams. The win secures certain promotion for the U10’s to the first division for next year.

The U9 Lady Attack were in the hunt for the Championship all season long only to give up a tie and a loss in the final weeks. However, the U9 RatPack is considering joining the Lady Attack and merging to form two strong teams. The RatPack won the League this year. Together the two teams offer a very bright future for the girls.

The U8 Lady Attack went 7-1 in the second division of U9 play, defeating all of the other U8 teams, including the teams that finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th last Fall when the U8 Lady Attack was playing 3v3. The U8’s lone loss came at the hands of a U9 team.

Finally, a side note. four girls from the U9 Lady Attack competed in the Hersey Track and Field games in early June. As a 4x100 relay team, Lauren Gessler, Alyssa Weger, Emily Herndon and Molly Norbutg came in first, beating not only all of the girl, but also all the boy teams. Molly Norburg set a new record in the softball throw, securing 1st place with a throw ten feet longer than any previous attempt, while Lauren Gessler and Emily Herndon finished 1st and 2nd in the 400 meter dash. The girls are now off to the State Meet in Emporia over the Fourth of July and after that, with any luck, to the National Competition.

THREE ATTACK TEAMS WIN KANSAS STATE CUP FINALS
Three Attack boys teams and one Lady Attack team advanced to the final rounds of State Cup play. State Cup is the tournament that crowns the top team each year in every age bracket from U12 through U23, with the older ages competing under the governance of the USASA. U14 teams and older also compete for the National Championship with State Champions meeting in first in Regional Competition, and the four Regional winners challenging for the National Title.

The U17’s, coached by Emilio John and Sammy Ekeme, won the State Championship. Their semi-final game drew a crowd of over 500 as team mates and spectators from other teams watched an incredible game. The Attack again scored first, but their opponents tied the game forcing sudden death overtime. In the 25 minute of overtime an exhausted Attack secured the winning "Golden Goal", thereby dethroning the five time Kansas State Champions.

The final for the U17’s was even more challenging. With the Attack limited to 13 players (2 subs) due to injuries, and the other team frequently subbing up to six players to take advantage of the depleted Attack side, the team played through 90 minutes of regular time, and then two 15 minute overtimes before foring the game to penalty kicks. Each team made their first three PK’s, but the Attack keeper came up huge, smoothering shots four and five.

After two overtime games, and only one goal scored in the two final games, the U17’s captured the State Championship.

The U18’s on other hand dominated the oppoistion. Again the defense was solid, withthe U18’s allowing only one goal thoughout the competition. In the final the Attack scored three goals, cruising to its third State Championship in four years. At Regionals the U18’s advanced to the semi--finals, the second time they have risen to this elite level.

The U16 Boys coached by Fatai Ayoade had a hear breaking loss in the semi-final game falling 3-2 to the eventual Kansas State Champions. The U16’s scored first, but fell behind at the end.

The U23 Lady Attack, coached by Alan Blinzler won Kansas State Cup and qualified for both Regionals and the USASA Tournament of Champions to be played in Kansas City in late July.

WILLIAM JOHN NAMED McDONALD’S/NSCAA ALL AMERICAN
Each year the National Soccer Coaches Association names 40 High School Seniors as All Americans. Twenty nominees compose the East Coast squad and another twenty form the West Coast team that will match up in an exhibition game in late July. This year WILLIAM JOHN was named to this very prestigious list.

Culminating a year that has seen him named Metro Player of the Year, Missouri All State Team, Missouri Offensive Player of the Year, Missouri Gatoraid Player of the Year, and to the US National Team Pool to name a few of his honors, the All American selection caps an outstanding career in youth soccer.

Will plays on the U18 Attack coached by Emilio John, as well as on the PDL Kansas City Brass. Next fall William will be playing for St. Louis University.

Also making a strong showing was the Lady Attack U11 team which competed a year up in teh U12 age group. The U11 Lady Attack went 2-1, losing to the pool champion.

APRIL TOURNAMENT RESULTS
The Attack had a very successful tournament campaign in April, 2003, led by the U17 boys, coached by Emilio John. The U17’s went undefeated and untied in the Metro FC College Showcase in St. Louis in the beginning of the month and finished the month capturing the Championship of the Gold Cup in Kansas City.

The U18 boys, coached also by Emilio John, took second in the Gold Cup, while both the U16 and U14 boys, coached by Fatai Ayoade, took second in the Ozark Scholarship Invitational in Springfield, Missouri. For the U16’s it was a long contest, ending after two overtimes and penalty kicks on a one goal difference to a strong Tulsa National side.

In May the Attack teams will be involved with the preliminary rounds of State Cup and the KCI tournament, while the Lady Attack teams will vie for hardware in the Governor’s Cup in Topeka and the Kansas City Invitational.

The first weekend in February saw seven Attack teams playing in the finals of the Kansas City Futsal League.

On the boys side, The Attack 88/89 coached by Carlos Olivas finished second in the U13 Boys Premier Division, while the Attack Fire coached by Robi Goff finished third and fourth in the Boys U13 Champions Division. The Fire split into two teams for Futsal and after a season of play were confronted with each other for the third place final.

Our U8 boys team coached by Jeremy McElduff rounded out the boys side. The U8 boys finished second in the U8 Champions Division.

On the girls side, out U11 Lady Attack also split into two teams, with one in the U12 Premier Division and the other in the U12 UEFA Divsion. Despite playing a year up the girls won first place in both divisions.

The U8 Lady Attack was the lone girls team its age and was placed in the U8 Boys Champions Divsion where it finished fifth.

ATTACK TEAMS WIN WINTER MAGIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Seven teams from the Attack entered the Winter Magic Indoor Invitational Tournament, held over Martin Luther King weekend, with four reaching the semi-finals, and two winning their age groups.

On the girls side, the U11 Lady Attack, coached by Mark Bilski, won defeating KCFC in the final and a very tough Pink Panthers side in the semis. The win was especially sweet for the girls, as it avenged their loss in the finals last year at the hands of the Pink Panthers.

The U9 Lady Attack, coached by Jim Schwab, fell 2-3 to NOKC from Oklahoma City in the semi-finals. NOKC had rocketed thru their division, beating the Legends 8-1, KCFC 6-1 and Futura 12-0. The Lady Attack played to a scoreless first half only to fall a goal short in the final minutes.

On the boys side, the U18 Attack, coached by Emilio John, captured the championship defeating Genesis 84 from Oklahoma.

The U17 Attack, also coached by Emilio John, lost in the semi finals to Elite Blue from Wichita, 3-4.

This year the Winter Magic was the premier indoor soccer tournament in the Midwest featuring 209 teams from seven states.

ATTACK PLAYERS EARNING HONORS IN HIGH SCHOOL
The Attack Soccer Club has had three U18 teams, and each year one of those teams graduated from high school, the player chosen Metro Player of the Year came from the Attack. This year continues that trend, with William John selected on December 8, by the Kansas City Star as the 2002 Metro Player of the Year.

Another repeat accomplishment that was again true this year was more players chosen from the Attack to the First Team All Ametro than from any other club.

Here is the list of Attack Players that were recognized for outstanding play in High School. High School recognition is fickle and often many great players do not receive the recognition they deserve because they were on losing teams or out of favor with their coaches. Nevertheless, those that are recognized are to be commended, and again the Attack has more players in the significant catergories than any other Soccer Club in the metropolitian area:

YOUNGEST LADY ATTACK TEAM CAPTURES SECOND IN THEIR FIRST TOURNAMENT
The U8 Lady Attack took second place in their first tournament, the Turkey Shoot 3v3 Tournament, held over Thanksgiving Weekend. The youngest girls’ team in the Club, began competitive play four weeks ago, but have been training together throughout the Fall. Special thanks go to Sophie Wallace and Kaylee Miller from the SWU Flames, who guest played with the Lady Attack. Also, thanks to Challenger Sports for allowing the Lady Attack to participate on short notice.

ATTACK PLAYERS ARE DOMINANT FORCE IN ROCKHURST HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE
Eight Attack players formed the core of the Rockhurst High School team that played in the Missouri large school State Soccer Championship over the weekend of November 23 and 24 in St. Louis. Attack players Robby Borchardt, Jimmy Chalmers, Michael Cominskey, William John, Jack Jones and Alex Nordholm from the 84/85 Attack, and Kerry Bowen and Seamus McLaughlin from the 85/86 Attack were instrummmental in Rockhurst High School’s sixth appearance in the Finals in the last six years.

The Kansas City Star on Sunday, November 16, described the role Attack players had in Rockhurst’s Quarterfinal win as follows:

"Rockhurst, 25-3, used precise execution and timely passing in avenging a 2-1 loss to Central, 24-2-1, earlier in the season."

"While the defense checked an aggressive Central offense, Rockhurst midfielders William John, Jack Jones and Robby Borchardt waited at midfield for quick outs that created favorable matchups."

"With Central unable to break Rockhurst’s defense, John took advantage early when Jones broke free at midfield. From right to left, Jones passed to John who sent a shot past Central goalkeeper Brad Scroggins, putting the Hawklets up 1-0."

"John provided the Hawklets with an insurance goal in the second half. Ten minutes into the half, Borchardt and John collected the ball on a break and dribbled it back and forth down the field. With John lining up on the left, Borchardt shot from the right. John caught the ricochet and sent it past Scroggins, making it 3-1."

"`Robby and I, on the third goal, really put together a nice combination,’ John said."

Three goals scored by Rockhurst and all the assists and goals came from players from the Attack 84/85 team coached by Emilio John.

Again during the semifinal, all of Rockhurst’s scoring came from players with the Attack. Early in the second half, Jack Jones took a shot that deflected off Will John, allowing Rockhurst to take the Lead. Their opponents soon tied the game. The game remain tied through the end of regulation and through two overtimes, leading to penalty kicks. Five players came to the spot for Rockhurst: Robby Borchardt, Mike Camiskey, Alex Nordholm, William John and Jack Jones. All five play on the 84/85 Attack, and all five buried their shots. Rockhurst’s opponent made its first four, but struck the post on the fifth to give Rockhurst the win.

The final was not so happy. In a rematch of a game from earlier in the season Rockhurst lost to Chaminade 3-0 in the Class 3 title game at Anheuser-Busch Center in suburban St. Louis.

ORAN ANDREWS (ATTACK 84/85) NAMED 2002 ALL-SUN COUNTRY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
On Thursday, November 21, the Sun Newspapers released their picks for Sun Country 1st Team, 2nd Team and Honorable Mention, and leading the lists was ORAN ANDREWS (Attack 84/85 coached by Emilio John), chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year. Andrews, a junior at Aquinas, was described by his High School Coach as follows:

"[Center Defender is a] position [that] requires not only a great soccer player, but a great athlete. Oran is both. He can run down any forward in town. He can out jump any target player around to win a head ball, and is strong enough to win the 50/50 ball."

"With those same skills Oran becomes an offensive weapon. We run set pieces off his huge throw-in, and he takes all of the back post runs on our corner kicks that produced 18 goals this season."

Joining Oran in receiving honors from the Sun Newspaper were seven other Attack players. Including:

Steve Grow, Attack 85/86, Aquinas
Scott Cupryk, Attack 84/85, Aquinas
Richie Harris, Attack 84/85, SM East
Lucas Rodgriguez, Attack 85/86, SMNW
Joe Welch, Attack 85/86, BV West
Scott Grimsley, Attack 84/85, Aquinas

WILLIAM JOHN POSTS SINGLE SEASON SCORING RECORD AT ROCKHURST HIGH SCHOOL
From the The Kansas City Star, "High School Notebook", of November 12, 2002:

His coach already thought he was the best soccer player to go through Rockhurst in 10 years, but Will John (ATTACK 84/85) gave himself a little statistical support when he broke the school’s single-season scoring record last week.

John recorded a hat trick in a 5-1 victory over Raytown South in the district championship. That gave him 33 goals this season and broke the mark set . . . three years ago.

"A lot of people had been talking about it," John said. "It’s not something I play for. But once I got close to it, it was kind of a goal for me."

Rockhurst coach Chris Lawson compares John favorably to Matt Jewett (ATTACK 80/81), who graduated in 2000 and led the school to two state championships.

John is simply more skilled, according to Lawson.

"They’re both special, don’t get me wrong," Lawson said. "But I think even Matt would admit that Will is just a little better individually."

John, a first-team All-Metro pick last year, leads Rockhurst, 23-3, against Lee’s Summit, 20-4-3, in a Missouri Class 3 sectional. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. at Lee’s Summit District Activity Complex.

Rockhurst has advanced to the [State] semifinals in each of the last five years.

The Blue Jays have been ranked in the top 20 for almost the entire season this year.

Rockhurst Unviversity has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division 2 National Championship with the help of Pat Geraghty and Brian Wittenborn (both with the Attack 81/82, coached by Fatai Ayoade). Last year when Pat and Brian were members of the Johnson County Community College team that took 3rd in the Nation, Rockhurst had a losing season. This year with Pat and Brian, Rockhurst has been ranked in the top twenty from the second week of the season and is making its first appearance ever in the NCAA National Championship Tournament.

ATTACK PLAYERS SELECTED FOR REGION II TEAMS
Six players from Kansas were honored this month when they were selected for Region II teams. The United States is divided into four Regions, with Region II taking in the entire Midwest. To be chosen for Regional Team, a player must first be selected to his State Team. Generally, each Region selects approximately 24 players for a team from the 250 players from 13 to 14 State Associations that comprise each Region. This means a player chosen for a Regional Team can fairly be described as one of the top 100 players his age in the country. For the fourth year in a row the Attack has had more players selected for this honor than all other clubs in Kansas. Three of the six players came from the Attack: WILLIAM JOHN (’85), LUCAS RODRIQUEZ (’86), and ALEX LEMMON (’87). Congratulations!

Mark’s Kansas side won the border war 4-0.

TRAVEL TO EUROPE
There are a number of programs that offer teams and players a chance to travel to Europe to play tournaments, while affording the family the chance for a once in lifetime vacation. For the past two months we have been working with Harriet Matthews of River City Travel to develop a program for our teams and others. Harriet has been in the travel business and helped soccer teams for two decades. She arranged Europe trips for her own children. (Her older son played on the Attack 80/81 and 81/82 teams and the Kansas 81 ODP team, while her daughter played for KCFC and the Kansas 84 ODP side.) Harriet agreed to put together a plan for our teams that offers the following:

1. It would include the top tournaments in Europe – the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the Harlem Cup in Amsterdam, Holland.

2. It will be affordable.

3. It will offer parents and siblings the chance to have optional side trips to Stockholm, Copenhagen, London and Paris.

4. It will timed so there will be no conflict with Regional or State ODP camps.

5. Unlike other programs, this will be tailored to each team’s needs, including pre- arranged practice times and locations, and a variety of accommodations to meet each team’s requirements.

A sample itinerary could include:
